San Bartolomeo is an 18th century farmhouse in the town of Sarteano overlooking the rolling hills of the beautiful countryside of the Valdichiana. The two-story house, which retains its historical façade, has been totally renovated and furnished with contemporary and antique furnishings. The property sits on four hectars that include secular trees, an orchard, a special collection of roses and a herb and vegetable garden. From the center of the property begin paths ideal for lovely walks, totally immerged in silence, broken only by the singing of the birds. The area is thickly wooded and according to seasons dotted with wild roses, broom, prickly pear, violets and holly. Wild life includes cuckoo birds, pheasants, hares, boars, deer and porcupines that are perfectly at home here. Throughout the grounds are many seating areas that allow privacy.  Summer evenings are the best time to enjoy the bright stars that light up the sky overlooking the pristine area from the terraced lawn at the front of the house or from the much larger one at the back.

The four kilometer white dirt road that leads to the house from the center of Sarteano runs through beech and oak woods and borders the Grottos of Saint Francis and a small medieval convent dedicated to San Bartolomeo. It is said that Saint Francis visited the area from nearby Assisi in 1212 and 1215 and lived in the cells in the woods, one of which has a large cross engraved on the floor.

This charming residence affords complete privacy and serenity, and is the ideal place to relax on your holiday. Whether visiting the villages, enjoying the outdoors or lounging around the house it is truly a place where one can experience "la dolce vita" amid the Tuscan countryside.  In addition, within short distance are Renaissance and Medieval towns such as Pienza, Montepulciano, Chiusi, Cortona, Cetona and Citta' della Pieve, which all offer picturesque churches and village squares, quaint shops and fine dining. Less than an hour away are Arezzo, Perugia, Siena, Assisi and Orvieto, cities that are world famous for their beauty, history, art, good food and fine wines.

Leonardo da Vinci

The drawing by Leonardo da Vinci shows the exact same view that is visible from San Bartolomeo today. It was drawn around 1502 during the time  Leonardo worked for Cesare Borgia. It was incorporated in the Mona Lisa painting and by looking closely at it you can see that it holds 2 disjoined halves of the same image. It is now in the Royal Library in the Castle of Windsor.
